What I Saw
It began almost two decades ago, while Dr. Ivy Bonk was serving as a school principal, she began to see a pattern she could not ignore: she suspected that children were being referred for special education testing that did not have a true learning disability, rather signs of trauma, dysregulation, disconnection, and unmet developmental need. She recognized that something deeper was happening beneath the surface of education.
What she has learned is that too often, education systems respond to symptoms without fully seeing the child’s story, identity, development, family context, or readiness to learn. Behavior is misread. Disengagement is misunderstood. Struggle is mislabeled. And over time, the cost of that misalignment is carried by children, educators, families, communities, and society.
That recognition became the foundation of her life work, and after completing her doctorate she would begin the journey of Rethink Learning: a call to help leaders see education not merely as an academic delivery system, but as part of the upstream architecture of human flourishing.
The invitation is simple: to see differently, build differently, and help education become a coherent foundation for children, families, communities, and society to flourish.
